Christmas Lighting Festival December: This yuletide event takes place each weekend in December and provides plenty of holiday cheer for visitors of all ages. During this event, you can expect plenty of ways to enjoy the winter weather including sledding in the park, meetings with Santa, a holiday choir, and a traditional Gluhwein Tent that offers hot wine and cider. The W enatchee River is just a minute drive from downtown Leavenworth. Here, you can go paddleboarding , hiking, golfing, and more! Two of the leaders instrumental in this effort were Pauline and Owen Watson, longtime residents of Leavenworth who owned and operated Alpine Electric out of one of the buildings on Front Street.
In the decision was made by key business owners to adopt the Bavarian theme and remodel their buildings. Pauline created sketches of some of the storefronts and presented these ideas to other business owners. An agreement was reached and Project Alpine was formed to guide the Bavarianization of Leavenworth, with Pauline serving as chairperson for over ten years. One of the most impressive facts about this entire project is that it was financed with private money — no federal assistance at all.
Simply dedicated people mortgaging everything they had! The town underwent an amazing transformation. The first six buildings were remodeled in and , and the others soon followed. Art in the Park and Amberleaf Theater began soon after, and Leavenworth was on its way to what you see today — a premier destination for family vacations, holidays, recreation and getaways.
Alpine-style buildings with restaurants serving German beer and food line Front Street. The Nutcracker Museum displays thousands of nutcrackers, some dating back centuries. On the Wenatchee River, Waterfront Park is a habitat for ospreys and eagles. The village is a gateway to nearby ski areas and wineries.
The area scuffled along for more than thirty years, always on the brink of extinction. If the gorgeous alpine hills had no equal except in German Bavaria, the city planned on completing the experience. This was no mere facelift. In addition to completely renovating the downtown area, community leaders created a series of festivals, drawing revelers into town.
From there, the Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest, and the immensely popular Christmas Lighting Festivals were born and continue to this day. To say the change worked is like saying you can taste a hint of cabbage in kraut. For decades, Leavenworth has been a top tourist destination in the Pacific Northwest.
