How can short girls wear maxi skirts

Even though I may have to think about it a little bit more than someone with legs for days, there are options for us short gals!! I always get extra motivated to pull mine out when I see petite celebrities wearing them.

Here are a few things I always keep in mind…. Since I have a bigger hips and a smaller waist, I always prefer high waisted bottoms. Just look for solid colors or a floral maxi where the pattern is the same all the way down the skirt. That way, no one will even notice if you shortened it! Again, it helps draw the eye to your waist and makes you look a little taller!

However, busty and plus-size petite women must stay away from them. Avoid maxi dresses with contrasting border details on the hem. The borders will only make you look shorter than you already are.

Heidi Klum wearing a horizontally paneled maxi dress that petites should avoid while out and about in Brentwood, California, on April 21, ; Carmen Electra busting out of an animal-print halter-neck maxi dress at the Elizabeth Glaser Celebrity Carnival in Santa Monica, California, on June 13, ; Lily Allen wearing a border-hemmed maxi dress that draws the eye downwards at the Cheltenham Festival at Cheltenham, England, on March 18, As much as possible avoid using belts in contrasting colors because that would be like creating one horizontal line across your body and cutting it in half.

If you do want to wear a belt, make sure you wear heeled sandals to compensate and balance out the loss in height. Also, pick a color that is similar or almost the same as the dress.

Hilary Duff wisely ditching the wide brown belt she initially accessorized a blue maxi dress with while shopping in Glendale in Los Angeles, California, on July 7, Enjoy dressing up! I dunno, sometimes a nice belt just below the breasts, might just shorten the torso, not the legs, which might seem longer and ending higher. Which is also why often the higher the waistline, the longer the skirt, the lower the heel :.

Thankfully, there are stores out there who offer alternations for free. Yes, free! I just learned the other day that Nordstrom offers free alterations. Talk about a win! I suggest this for a couple different reasons. Wearing heels or wedges gives you extra height, which also helps to elongate your overall appearance.

This makes finding a maxi skirt a little bit easier. This always saves me time! Wearing your shoes shopping seriously makes the entire process so much easier. In fact, the first maxi skirt I ever bought was one that sat on my hips. This was a very long time ago and was definitely a huge mistake on my part.

In some cases, the cost can be prohibitive — when you're buying a less expensive skirt at a fast fashion brand, it hardly seems worth it to get the thing altered for double its original price. That said, it's important to remember that some stores such as Nordstrom tend to offer free alterations.

Remember what I said about alterations being a bit pricey? Well, you can always go the DIY route, if you want to save some cash. Hemming a skirt isn't actually too hard — all you really need is an iron and a needle and thread and, of course, a sewing machine if you don't want to sew by hand. Now, if you're not feeling up to some light sewing, there are a few shortcuts you can take. If you've watched Project Runway , you probably know that there are some unconventional uses of staples that can come in handy here.

Strong double-sided fashion tape is another option, and there are iron-on hemming aids as well. Depending on your garment's fabric, it may be possible to shrink it slightly in the dryer for a better fit. You have to exercise some caution you don't want it to shrink to doll proportions!
